Language notes
SourcesUchdnagreintich. This name which was heard up to a hundred years or so ago, was applied to the place now called Hughton. It is not known who the person was. The form Heughden has been noted last century. Barron, H 1976, Some Notes on the Parish of Kiltarlity’

‘Uchd na Gréintich near Hughton’.: Robertson

Robertson and Barron also say it was known locally as An Èiphit because of the biblical nicknames of the inhabitants.

The Dictionary of National Biography gives Geroge Henderson’s place of birth has Heughden, Kiltarlity in 1866. On the balance of evidence, this would appear to probably not represent ‘Hugh + town’.
